Support francophone music at the GRAMMY Awards

Currently, francophone music is absent from the general categories of the GRAMMY Awards, struggling to be heard in the face of an anglophone predominance. Our talented artists deserve a stage where they can shine their own light.

These new categories would be grouped in a specific niche entitled “Francophone music”.

  • Francophone Rap Album of the Year (A)
  • Francophone Pop Album of the Year (A)
  • Francophone Song of the Year (S/T)

(A) = The category allows album entries

(S) = The category allows entries of singles

(T) = Category allows track entries (Any song from an album released in the last 12 months)

The objective is to offer a platform for francophone artists to celebrate their creativity, to highlight the diversity of talents that make up the francophone music scene. Our goal is to encourage young francophone artists to pursue their dreams and spread their culture.

Francophone population growth

World language

  • French is the 5th most spoken language in the world (with more than 300 million speakers) and is growing, especially in Africa, where the music scene is booming. Ignoring this reality is to ignore a major part of contemporary music culture.
  • Francophone music is expanding worldwide, with artists like Jul, Stromae, Angèle, Aya Nakamura, Maes, Ninho, Himra and Damso. These artists dominate international charts and collaborate with world stars, proving that French is an influential musical language.

Widely present in the media, cultural activities and literature, it plays a central role in the dissemination of knowledge and artistic expressions.

The most populous francophone countries include France, the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), Canada (Quebec), Belgium, Switzerland, and several African countries.

Recognition needed for cultural equity

  • Adding a francophone category would be a step towards a more equitable representation of the world’s musical cultures.
  • Francophone music, often underrepresented in major ceremonies, deserves a platform to shine internationally, just like English or Spanish-speaking productions.

A rich and influential cultural heritage

  • French is a historical language in music, with icons like Céline Dion, Gilbert Bécaud, Ginette Reno, Edith Piaf, Charles Aznavour, the Cowboys Fringants or more recently, Maître Gims, Charlotte Cardin, Loud, Barnev, Imposs,Taktika, Souldia and more. A Francophone music category would honour this heritage while celebrating the new generations of artists who carry this language internationally.
  • Francophone music has influenced many genres and artists around the world. It is time to give it the place it deserves on the world stage.
